Walk This Way

3 Comments | This entry was posted on Sep 29 2008

this_way.jpgI am continually amazed at the quality of photos this Nokia 5610 can take. I think the best part is that with the macro ability and the lens focus, you can achieve a much better depth of field. The results are so much better than most photos from camera phones, which usually come out flat and lacking depth (which is what makes creating content for this site so hard!).

Happy Monday!

The Black-and-White Obsession Continues

7 Comments | This entry was posted on Feb 28 2008

wood-fence.jpgI almost used the word “fetish” instead of “obsession,” but then I thought that might attract seekers of adult entertainment. But who in the heck would have a fence fetish? Well, there’s that guy who literally loves his car and that other guy who likes sleeping with his motorcycle. But a fence lover? Nah. Impossible. (I’d run a Google search, but I’m afraid of what I might find.)

2 minutes later…

OK, so I ran a search and it turns out that most results have to do with horses, fence-spotting, or violating the purpose of a fence. So it wasn’t that bad after all. If you have Google Earth (follow the link below if you don’t), check out this KML file of different snow fences. It’s actually nice photography.

Final Bloom

12 Comments | This entry was posted on Nov 21 2007

elephant-bloom.jpgAside from all of the dying air potato vines, a sure sign of cool weather is the blooming of the elephant ears around the yard. These late blooming perennials, also know as Alocasia Macrorrhiza, are scattered throughout the yard and they often survive the winter fairly well. While the leaves are sensitive to the freezes, the underground bulb is quite hardy and will quickly replace any damaged leaves.

This is the beauty of the house I moved into. It was built in 1962-ish and all of the trees and plants are well-established. These elephant ears crop up everywhere, often in surprising places (like directly underneath the gutter drain – it takes a beating but refuses to die!). They’re just another testament to the unwillingness of nature to give in.
