Non-Feral Cat in a Window
![]()
Somehow, this week started off as crazy cat lady week, but I assure you that this will be the only one for the rest of this week.
If you don’t remember her, this is my cat Nessa (Slayer of Dogs). The name is short for Vanessa, the name she had when I rescued her long ago. Supposedly her name was Hester at one point, because a co-worker saw her and said she was a foster home for her once. Yeah, whatever, I’m not calling my cat Hester. She answers to Nessa, but also Nessie, princess, kitty, hey you, doyouwantsometreats, annoying pest and many others.
But never Hester.
Experiment in Shadows: Identity Transformation
![]()
Photos can appear out of nowhere and when you least expect it. Because of this, its a good habit to remember that the phone you probably have in your pocket has probably got a camera in it. Take it out. Snap a picture. Amaze family and friends!
This is the case with many photos on this site, but shooting pictures was the last thing on my mind for this photo. I was heading to the parking lot one morning to get something from the car and the light was streaming into the stairwell, casting all kinds of long shadows and highlighting small details, like these tiny bumps in the walls. In normal light, this texture is barely noticeable, but the shadows cast in the early morning light give the wall a depth and feel it otherwise wouldn’t have.
Use shadows to your advantage. Look around in the morning or late afternoon and see how traditionally plain objects can take on a whole new persona with a little bit of shadowy emphasis.

In Case of Fire, Pull Down
I love how fire equipment caters to the lowest common denominator. Something about the simplicity of it really draws me in. I have this visual of a building up in smoke, with some guy standing next to the alarm (which was just pulled) and wondering what to do next. Maybe these should state something like, “Pull down and exit building,” or “Pull down and run!”
The irony of this photo, however, lies in the background. Yes, concrete. Non-flammable concrete. This got me thinking about how we talk about buildings catching on fire. Is it the building catching on fire or all the stuff inside it catching on fire? I know that when my office was renovated, the resulting smell was so toxic that there’s only two possibilities: 1) my office is impervious to fire from all of the fire-proof materials used to renovate it or 2) my office is a tinderbox of man-made office decor. I’m guessing it’s the latter.
The kicker: in the stairwells, there’s a fireplug (with no firehose) and a simple pressurized-water fire extinguisher. Like that is going to do anything against a raging office-carpet inferno!
