Watering Hole
The rain soaked us good last week. This is that fossilized shell rock photo I featured in September. It so weathered and beat up, with all kinds of chunks removed and holes bored through it from erosion. A divot on top provided a gathering place for just about one cup of rainwater, probably enough to create a million or so mosquitoes. Notice the reflection of the tall pines on the surface of the water, echoed by submerged pine needles that had fallen from those same trees.
Ancient Coral Stones
If you’re lucky enough to live in Key West, then this is the type of thing you get to see. It’s pretty much what the Florida Keys are built on. That and limestone. On our last visit, we found a quarry with more of this than you could ever think of carrying home. Let’s just say our gas mileage on the return trip was terrible. It’s beautiful stuff, though. To think that this was once alive and among what must have been a huge reef system.
Shells from the Past
As Florida used to be underwater, one would expect to find many ocean-like things in unexpected places. This is a photo of a rock near my kids’ school that is covered in fossilized shells. I could look at this rock all day. I wonder how long these shells have waited to be photographed?
I’ll have to post some shots of the fossilized coral in my garden. It’s amazing.
