The Bloom That Was Not

This rail is just outside the side door of the place I work. I pass it every afternoon on my way to the parking lot. When I noticed the morning glories taking over the entire area, I was thrilled because the photo opportunities were going to be great. Unfortunately, the building maintenance crew decided otherwise.

Today, the morning glories are dead vines that will not bloom. The worst part is that they didn’t even bother to remove them after spraying with weed killer. At least I have this one. Maybe next year.

Sepia Week, Day 6: A Day at the Museum

sepia_lily.jpgYou’re thinking, “What’s with the plant? I thought it was a day at the museum?”

The family and I went for a trip to the Samuel P. Harn museum of art located on the University of Florida campus for a few hours of browsing and some interactive Japanese ink drawing. the courtyard in the middle of the museum provided some great shots, more of which you will see in upcoming days. Tomorrow is the last day of Sepia Week and I couldn’t be happier. This camera phone sepia filter is terrible.

Grayscale Week, Day 5: Elephant Ears

elephant_ears.jpgWhat a day. I took this picture on my way out the door, but forgot to post it! Better late than never. I’m surprised Dan didn’t prod me for a post. Speaking of Dan, congratulate him on his Photoshop victory where he made John Chow look like Britney Spears. Sheer brilliance.

Alongside the pinecone ginger are some elephant ears that come up every spring and bloom in the late summer. If it’s a mild winter, they hang around, but one good freeze and they’re history.

They seem to be doing much better this year than last, probably due to the heavy rains we had last month. Hopefully, the rains will return. But then again, that just means I have to mow the lawn more.

More Ginger Blooms

gingerblooms-from-above.jpgThe ginger in the front yard is going crazy this year, blooming all over the place. Here’s an overhead shot of four bulbs, with three of them flowering. When they’re done flowering, the bulb gets full of a clear liquid that has a light perfumed scent – it smells amazing. From what I’ve read, awapuhi can do all kinds of things, from curing a bad stomach to washing hair.

I chose this photo crop because the green part of the plant commanded so much attention. Although it’s not the best crop, I felt like keeping the leaves because they looked so healthy. When this stuff dies off in the fall, it’s not pretty, so I’ve got to enjoy it now.

Happy Friday!

Blooming Sour Grass

sourgrass-blooms.jpgBack in October, I posted a photo of my lawn, or lack thereof. It was a black-and-white photo of what I now know to be called sour grass (thanks to Debo Hobo), but it wasn’t anything spectacular to look at. While I’ve seen it bloom before, I haven’t seen it look so robust and hearty.

The sour grass in the photo here is from my friend’s yard about a mile away. What strikes me is how much more attractive the variety he has growing is over the variety I have. The stuff in my yard is thin and flimsy, while the sour grass in his yard is dark green and dense. In spite of this, however, the blooms are identical.

While photographing this afternoon, my daughter told me that some kids at school eat the flowers. Of course, she knew more about the plant than me, and proceeded to make sure that I was aware of this. Once my inferior intellect was established, she picked a bunch of them for mom and off we went. Gotta love the kids.
