Up a Tree (Without a Paddle?)
Last tree, I swear (yeah, right).
By the way, I hear that Nokia is coming out with a touchscreen version of the 5610 (the camera used in the last ten posts or so). Wonder if I’ll get a shot at test driving one of those?
In other news, it is rumored that Verizon, among others, will be picking up a CDMA-version iPhone. I normally don’t jump on the bandwagon, but I love the iPhone features and interface from what I’ve seen. The only reason I don’t have one is because AT&T is horrible where I live. If Verizon gets it, then it’s upgrade time (but I’m not holding my breath).

Slip Sliding Away
A fitting image for a Thursday. It’s all downhill from here. I know, the saying doesn’t quite match the photo. If I had a picture of a hill, I’d post it, but a slide is going to have to do.
Many thanks to those who stopped by yesterday to see Vanessa, my most awesome and totally cute cat. She rules.

Walk This Way
I am continually amazed at the quality of photos this Nokia 5610 can take. I think the best part is that with the macro ability and the lens focus, you can achieve a much better depth of field. The results are so much better than most photos from camera phones, which usually come out flat and lacking depth (which is what makes creating content for this site so hard!).
Happy Monday!
Tiles at the Thomas Center
Here’s a simple photo of tiles embedded in a concrete bench located on the grounds of the historic Thomas Center. The Thomas Hotel, as it was called, began as a family home and then expanded into a hotel. After a few years, the hotel closed and a community college took up residence. Demolition time came in the early 1970s, but the hotel was purchased by the city and restored. It finally achieved a listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

Wordless Wednesday 13 – “Ralphie”
Table-top Memorial
There’s a park in town that was established as a victim memorial for Gainesville/Alachua County residents. Squirrel Ridge Park boasts a three-acre dog park and large, open spaces with old-growth oak trees. It’s an amazing place to visit and is usually busy from sunrise to sunset.
What people tend to forget is the memorial aspect of the park. As my daughters and I were photographing everything in sight, we came across a concrete picnic table topped with ceramic tiles. Each tile is a memorial in itself, a four-by-four space to remember a lost loved one. After looking at it closer, you feel the connection behind each tile and the fact that every one represents a victim of violent crime. A simple mosaic can convey so much emotion.
Two of them in particular caught my eye:
A coward dies a thousand deaths, but a soldier just once.
and
May my grief be the soil in which I grow roses. May my tears water them.
But the one that struck me the most simply stated this:
Dad
