Name that Bug
I’m having a problem trying to identify this bug.
It looks like a moth crossed with a caterpillar, but flies like a hummingbird. It landed on an outdoor shade near my wife and stayed there for about two days without moving. This morning, it decided to leave, much to my chagrin. (I’ve always wanted to use that word.) So I need your help.
If you can identify this bug for me, I’d be eternally grateful. I’ve never seen one before, and I’ve seen a LOT of bugs. A link to a reference would be great also.
Thanks!
This photo was taken with the Sony H3, not the camera phone.

Oh geez, well I just spent some time researching for you to no avail. I’d suggest you submit the photo to a bug site that can identify it for you. I’ll ask a pal of mine about the image, and see if he can tell me what it is.
Ok well he referred me to a couple names, and so I googled them and through a little more research, I think I found it. In fact I’m pretty sure.

Oh pooh! I just did a pile of research and came up with the same thing – if you put Tersa Sphinx moth into Google image search it has lots of pix of moths looking very like yours.
Too late again!

Gee, I go out of town for the weekend and miss all the fun. Chica is right; it is a sphinx moth. And it does look like the Tersa variety.
Haven’t seen one in years. Used to have tomato hornworms back in Michigan when we had a garden; but have only sparsely seen them in Ohio, and can’t remember having seen one for at least a few years.
