The ginger in the front yard is going crazy this year, blooming all over the place. Here’s an overhead shot of four bulbs, with three of them flowering. When they’re done flowering, the bulb gets full of a clear liquid that has a light perfumed scent - it smells amazing. From what I’ve read, awapuhi can do all kinds of things, from curing a bad stomach to washing hair.
I chose this photo crop because the green part of the plant commanded so much attention. Although it’s not the best crop, I felt like keeping the leaves because they looked so healthy. When this stuff dies off in the fall, it’s not pretty, so I’ve got to enjoy it now.
Happy Friday!

Pine cone ginger ale - I may have a new niche product. Hmmm.
I am really wondering what the liquid tastes like and what the smell is like. Someone has to invent scratch and sniff monitors, unless it’s on Dcr Blogs- I don’t even want to smell what creepy pants is cooking.
I’m going to break one open once it ripens. They bloom and then the bulb turns a reddish color. That’s when the smell is the strongest.
Not sure I want to smell creepy pants either. :D
How come I never get comment luv- even though I check the box? You hate me too- I knew it.

Wow, mad blooms, dude! Oh yeah…you need to give us an update on the broken agave plant stalk. Is it still rigid enough to use as a sailboat mast…or something?

Unfortunately, the agave did nothing spectacular. The big stalk is still there, however.

That is such an unusual plant - we don’t have anything like that here in the UK - probably too wet - although we are having a bit of a heat wave at the moment. Well, for us anyway!

From what I’ve read, they thrive in a somewhat dry environment. Which is good because I’m not big into watering plants in my yard. I like the xeriscaped look.
