A Dog’s Version of How to Look Pitiful

Wednesday night was bath night. Thankfully, I managed to cram it into the list of things to do before Thursday, the day of my surgery.
You see, we are experiencing a flea and tick problem again. Fleas and ticks are a major nuisance that are incredibly difficult to get rid of. Strangely, we had no problems with ticks until last summer. They just came out of the woodwork. This summer, we thought we were ready for the onslaught, but to our amazement, they came back in force.
Enter the dog bath.
There’s this great flea and tick shampoo for dogs that foams up like shaving cream, which makes it easier to apply and thoroughly work into the skin. For it to eradicate the bands of rogue vermin, it must remain on the dog for about five minutes. To make better use of the time, I decided to wash two dogs at once; Rosie the Chihuahua, who just so happens to love baths as you can tell from the picture, and Sage, our beloved Cockapoo, who is also a huge fan of bath time. Don’t be fooled by the look on her face.
Once the poisonous destroyer of vermin is applied, you wait.
And wait.
For five long minutes.
What better time for pictures than now? Two pitiful looking dogs staring you down with those big puppy dog eyes is a hard shot to pass up. I’m happy to report that they survived the torturous bath, emerging flea and tick free. A quick shot of Advantix flea and tick treatment and we’re on the road to winning the tick battle. But we have yet to win the war.
Flea and tick season has just begun.

Such cute faces! Almost didn’t spot the chihuahua in there
How do you stop them shaking themselves? Whenever I used to bath my (ex) dogs the first thing they did was give a good shake and shower everything within a 10 ft radius.
The long haired cats were more of a problem and the ticks had to be picked off by hand - horrible job!

The trick to keeping the water shaking to a minimum is to wash everything but their heads and ears first. That way, they don’t shake. When the body is done, then wash their head and stand back! Unless you want to get wet.

Awe poor thing. We use some chemical that gets dropped on their back and that is supposed to control the ticks.
Great shot as usual :) She has the same expression as our Maltepoo.

What are you doing to that poor Chihuahua? Why do you let her go outside and get fleas and ticks? She could be scooped up by a hawk or eagle. That’s not right. Bath time is not right. Bath’s are bad. Don’t do it to the poor Chihuahua. Just say “no” to baths! No!

Oh Dan, you almost got me. ALMOST. Love the alter-ego you have going. Or maybe your dog is literate, who knows.

She’s your standard Chihuahua. She eats. She sleeps. She barks. She blogs.

Frontline Plus works really well on fleas and ticks (and mosquitoes!) However, you still have to treat the environment as they have this two-week cycle that needs to be broken.
Wash all bedding and washable rugs, couch covers — basically anything the dog lies on. Spread an insecticide that has an IGR in it (insect growth regulator), let sit for an hour, then vacuum floors and carpeting. If the dogs go outside a lot, then you’ll also need to treat the lawn with a product containing IGR.
Redo all the above every two weeks for 3 months and you should have your problem contained.
I live in the middle of 99 acres of woods with all sorts of wildlife in it, have 10+ dogs and zero fleas. Ticks are another issue entirely, but I don’t see very many of those.
Good luck! The dogs will appreciate not having baths in that smelly flea and tick shampoo!

This picture is great in black and white. I hate the smell of it though.
