Tragedy in Wonderland
A few days ago, a terrible crime occurred on a different part of this trail. A 36-year-old woman was brutally beaten and then raped while on her morning jog around 6:30 am.
The crime occurred in an affluent neighborhood with a normally low crime rate. I’d be surprised if there were any crimes there, to be honest. But here we are, three days beyond something that isn’t supposed to happen in such a neighborhood. It isn’t supposed to happen in anyone’s neighborhood.
The photo itself is textbook, with the trail fading off into obscurity, bordered by young oaks on each side. How quickly a picture of serenity can become a crime scene photograph.
There were more patrol cars there than I had ever seen. This guy is at-large and there’s little to go on. The newspaper reported that he casually got in a car and drove away. That’s it.
Stay vigilant. Violent crime has no boundaries.

Wow, you actually went out to Haile for that? I saw the story in the front page of the paper today. Pretty scary. East Side crime is pretty prevalent, but out at Haile? Pretty unheard of.
For the latest on the story:

You are so right. We are never safe, yet we need balance so as not to live in fear. Such is the life of a woman sometimes. ALways aware, always on the lookout. I constantly find myself looking around to see what my weapons are, just in case. I’ve never been a victim of a violent crime but I know it happens.
I hope the woman heals and gets help to deal with her trauma.

That is horrific to hear, but the picture made it more intense. I remember a few years ago when women were being attacked in our park and to this day, I am still very aware of my surroundings when out with the girls. It’s sad that even running at 6:30am is dangerous these days. Criminals don’t sleep.
On a lighter note, I am FINALLY here! Always late, but worth the wait, I like to say
Great blog!

It’s a shame that there are people in the world who would do such terrible things.
