Another Coat of Paint

This entry was posted on Apr 08 2008

OK, so I tried to use the Mimbo theme, but it wasn’t working out. Too much in the way of custom fields and the sidebar wasn’t making the most of the limited real estate. Hence, this updated theme.

There’s a few things missing and the styles are a bit tweaked out, but I’ll be working on it periodically this week. Sit back and enjoy the process known as beating yourself over the head repeatedly Wordpress Theming!

Oh, and feel free to leave your comments and/or suggestions. Thanks!

  1. Ha!! Shoulda got a Joomla!

  2. I think I’m just going to stick with the theme I use for most of my blogs, and just get into customizing it more. I really need to dig in deep and get into the stylesheet, and add comments or something to better identify what’s what. It’s always a pain to change colors for new blogs, as frequently what you think you’re changing isn’t what’s being changed. Argh! On one blog, I have yet to figure out where the one instance of type is being defined so that I can get it in line with the rest of the type.

  3. LOL! Well, maybe one day, but you need to check out YooTheme for some awesome templates that make life oh so easy.

  4. Well, for what it’s worth…

On this end, it still looks great! Sleek, clean design. The white background with dark gray text for the main part of the blog with the dark gray on the sides works well for your content (IMHO). That way, the sidebar content takes just a bit of a backseat to the more important content in the main area (but you still notice it). It’s less distracting that way.

    I like it, Pete.

Sorry it’s been frustrating! Hang in there.

  5. Your statement about beating yourself over the head/wordpress theming almost killed me. I just got my own domain on Thursday evening and got my first experiences with beating AND then wordpress does this 2.5 thing at the same time! I almost killed myself and I only have half my hair left. Looks good though.

  6. I like this theme. I must confess, being a simple soul, I found the last one ever so slightly confusing – bit too ‘newspaper-y’. I love the colours of this one, it makes the colours in your photographs ‘zing’. And I really like the archives pages – very good indeed.

  7. You mean, now I don’t have to remember to click on the photo to see the entire photo before leaving some stupid comment about the thumbnail photo that’s not generally true about the whole photo?

  8. I like this theme. It has built in SEO stuff with the Google ads. Plus I think pictures look better and stand out with a dark background.

    Hope all is well Pete!

  10. Mimbo is a very nice theme, but it definitely isn’t the easiest theme to use. I decided to scrap the custom fields and images from everything but my main post, but I think someday (when I get around to inserting images in my older posts), I’ll play with those little thumbnails again.

  11. I guess there’s no option to reply to your reply, but anyway, I got around the duplication issue by making sure my categories didn’t overlap much. I have the following:
    - images: highlight on an event I’ve covered, an image I’m particularly proud of, or basically, images
    - gear: anything related to equipment (even tips on what stuff to use for certain situations)
    - tips: tutorials on processing, photoshop, shooting (basically handling the camera) and anything else that doesn’t fall under the gear category
    - news: site updates, announcements, and other things that don’t fall into any of the other categories

Brian Auer over at Epic Edits also uses Mimbo, but he obviously made full use of the custom fields.

Anyway, I think your theme looks great, and as they say, if it ain’t broke, why fix it?
