Make a Bad Photo Good in Three Steps

Every so often, that award-winning photo you had envisioned turns out to be a waste bin liner. You thought the frame captured what your mind saw, but apparently not. Other factors like equipment and lighting may cause problems with the final product as well, but this shouldn’t leave you discouraged. There is a way.
In this tutorial, you will learn how to salvage a bad photo in three easy steps, using Picasa2 photo editing software. A little crop, saturation and sharpening goes a long way. So before you delete those photos, watch this!

Welcome! Guess what - you’re the 1,000th comment! WOOOO!!!! I wish I had something to give you for this milestone. It really is a big deal for me.
It seems I get a lot of Apple visitors, so I’ll have to change tactics a little to help you out. I’d do a video tutorial for iPhoto, but my trusty G4 doesn’t have the power to do it. That may change soon, since I’m in the market for a Mac Pro.

Awww, shucks! I can’t believe I missed the 1000th comment by one. Rats!
Well, I still have that gold star…
Anyway…
I’m in Sandy’s boat. I was remembering Picasa from our PC days (thinking that we had it). We don’t have that either. I agree with Sandy, though, that I can do the things you went over in the tutorial on iPhoto on my mac. YAY! So, this comment was a longwinded way of saying, yes, the tutorial was helpful! Thanks!
And I’m overjoyed that you’re getting a Mac b/c then you’ll have some Mac specific tools on here, right?! And I bet you’ll be able to do even more interesting things with a Mac…

Thanks for broadening my own horizons as far as photo/artistic development. I gave you five stars for your work on this photo and I really hope that people are following my advice to checkout your website your tutorial is helpful for anyone without a lot of experience. Thanks!!!

bmgmom: I hope to have a new mac and yes, I will do mac-specific stuff. Of course, I can’t alienate my PC users, so the Windows stuff will be here as well. Turns out that I have about a 15% OS X visitor rate.
Opal: thanks, like I said above, more mac stuff coming soon. I was looking at the bigger laptops. Do you like it? I just feel like a desktop machine has so much more, but that’s just me. Maybe I’m hung up on the higher processor speeds.
Leatherboots: It’s my job to improve the quality of vacation photos around the world. I hope I can at least affect a few people.

Great tutorial, Pete. I already know this particular bit of stuff from Photoshop, or at least I fancy that I do, lol…
But I want to compliment you on your clarity and organization, and the fact that it’s just the right length for the average blog reader.
I wouldn’t know how to begin preparing a tutorial. You did a great job on this!

Thanks Lynda. I was aiming for the “average blog reader,” so I guess I hit the mark. Being too stiff with these tutorials is no fun, so I just make it up as I go along. It takes a few tries before I get it right. Glad you enjoyed it.

I enjoyed the Picasa tutorial. i use it as well and find it very helpful. I have trouble straighening my photos at times and find the straighten feature useful but arbitrary at times and my readers are fond of pointing that out.
The cement blocks on your photo for example don’t look exactly level to me. But it may be my eyeglasses. I wear very thick lenses.
In any case I enjoyed it and look forward to more lessons.

Thanks for your visit, David! Looking back at the photo, you’re right, the blocks are a bit off. I normally don’t use straighten in Picasa because I forget it’s there.
Come back soon, another tutorial is on the way.
