Blooming Sour Grass

This entry was posted on Dec 30 2007

sourgrass-blooms.jpgBack in October, I posted a photo of my lawn, or lack thereof. It was a black-and-white photo of what I now know to be called sour grass (thanks to Debo Hobo), but it wasn’t anything spectacular to look at. While I’ve seen it bloom before, I haven’t seen it look so robust and hearty.

The sour grass in the photo here is from my friend’s yard about a mile away. What strikes me is how much more attractive the variety he has growing is over the variety I have. The stuff in my yard is thin and flimsy, while the sour grass in his yard is dark green and dense. In spite of this, however, the blooms are identical.

While photographing this afternoon, my daughter told me that some kids at school eat the flowers. Of course, she knew more about the plant than me, and proceeded to make sure that I was aware of this. Once my inferior intellect was established, she picked a bunch of them for mom and off we went. Gotta love the kids.

  4. Nothing like watching grass grow or even paint dry. Really I like this photo and rate it as 5 stars. Happy New Year’s Day. Mom is watching The Roses Parade. Smile and have a Great Day.

  5. Wow, a shot from my front yard. I’m honored. Mucho thanko again for watching things for us over the holidays in abnormally warm Indiana.

  7. It was fun to lounge in the sun on a blanket in the yard while nibbling on the lawn as a kid.

  8. Oooh, I love that story. My kids still pick flowers for me and I always love it. I remember that thought-it-was-clover post back in October, but I’m surprised to learn these are the same plant/weed, just a different variety. Fascinating. Not sure whether it’s a good idea for the kids to eat those flowers, though…

    Another beautiful photo, Pete!

  9. Debo Hobo: wow, am I the only kid who didn’t do this? :P

bmgmom: Nope, I’m not the only one. Apparently, they are safe and kids have been eating them for years. All this talk about it has me wanting to at least chew on one to see how it tastes.

  10. Edible flowers rule. I love eating them. Your daughter is smart and for that my hats off to you.

  11. Did I mention that my daughter is a goat? Long story… :)
