Blowin’ in the Wind

puffball.jpgAs of yesterday, I’ve officially started my vacation. The workday on Friday seemed endless, so I walked the perimeter of the building and took the camera phone along for the ride. What I found was a tall fence with barbed wire (no, I don’t work at a prison) and this dandelion, getting ready to send it’s children off to start their new lives.

The photo was a bit too green for me that day, so I did a few things to it:

  • Open the photo in Photoshop CS
  • Select the white highlights
  • feather 2px, then copy to new layer
  • Desaturate the original layer, then adjust contrast via curves
  • Adjust hue/saturation on new layer
  • Voila!

What you get is a desaturated photo with a bit of color, in this case the light-colored highlights. Something different. Maybe a video tutorial is in order?

  1. Ooh! I’m loving this technique! I shall definitely be having a go at this….

  2. Nice image, but I think you overdid the desaturation. I think a little more green would really make the head on the dandelion pop a little more.

  8. It looks great I agree a little color or I would have went with “mid contrast” Aperture feature (what I mainly use) both would have really set the dandelion pop. Anyway I still like it. :-)

  11. Diane: Post the results if you think of it.

dcr and nanc: Yeah, now that time has passed, I’m thinking the same thing. But only a little bit of green. I like the coldness in the picture. Maybe a re-edit of the photo is in order.

shiera: Thanks, but I think dcr knows more. :D

Leatherboots: if it were about profit, I wouldn’t be doing this.

meleah: it’s a huge chunk of change, make sure you really want it. You’re on a mac? I hear good things about Aperture.

Rolando: Thanks for the Christmas wishes. I’m not so good at doing nothing, but I’m improving with each passing day.

Opal: I’m on the fence about taking out a 30-year mortgage a new mac or paying cash for a new pc. Aperture really has me thinking. And I already own Adobe CS2 for mac.

Jon: Nah, I don’t believe it. Surely you can come up with a decent photo. Your other pics are amazing.

bmgmom: Thanks, I’ll be tweaking it, so if you have any suggestions, let me know.

  12. Okay, well, only because you asked…
It would be helpful to go from post to post (like I’m fairly certain I did on your old site (?)) rather than going back home and then finding the next post. Definitely not a big deal, though.
I really like it. It’s so fitting, you know what I mean? It’s easier to read and still sleek and clean. Puts the focus where it belongs (on your pictures).
Visually (or aesthetically), it’s really terrific!

  13. The new site has is much more category-focused, so I’m not surprised at the bit of confusion. When you are on a post page, the right sidebar has a “more from this category” section. I still like the idea of flipping through posts like before, so I’m going to look into putting it back. Thanks for the feedback. Glad you like the new site!

  14. Oh, yeah…now I see it. Thanks!

  15. What a great pic and thanks for the description of your process although it is completely lost on me. How about black and white for this one…it is all I could think when I saw it. You feel me?

  16. Ah, the reason I didn’t understand your photo talk is because I have photoshop elements…the poor mans photoshop cs. :(

  17. I almost gave up on this photo, just because it wasn’t looking very good any way I handled it. The framing is nice, but the color was terrible and it didn’t look all that great in grayscale. I might have to re-post it since there’s been more critique on this particular photo than the others.
