Vanessa, Slayer of Dogs

Nessa - Slayer of DogsMeet Vanessa, fearless slayer of dogs and professional shedder of fur. None can compare. Better known as Nessa, she is known to put the smack down on three dogs who think they own the house, claiming every square inch as her own.

How does she do this? Notice one of the implements of destruction she has placed on casual display, a reminder to all those who pass that her unrelenting, claw-filled fury could be unleashed at any moment. The eyes, closed ever so slightly, lulls the opponent into a state of relaxation; the tail, kept close by so as not to leave herself exposed; the outstretched paw, to intimidate all.

Nessa came into my life in 1996. I had a cat named Bubba who was totally silent. Not a peep out of him, ever. Since I wanted two cats anyway, I decided to go to the local pet rescue and pick up another one to complement his monk-like silence. Enter Nessa.

The place had a ton of cats, all your average, regular type cat with nothing special to speak of. Some kittens, some old, some in-between, some that needed special care. It was like looking at day-old bread. I asked if there were any other cats “that meowed a lot” and the woman looked at me funny. She told me they had one in the back office that was totally sketched out by the crowd of people, so she was taken back there and placed on the file cabinet. We rounded the corner and there she was, totally freaking out, meowing up a storm. I took her on the spot. The same woman looked at me with a raised eyebrow like I was crazy to want her and proceeded to fill out the required forms.

I get Nessa home and place the carrier box on the floor and watch Bubba. He sniffs, sniffs again and then – here it comes – he meows. Years pass and Bubba developed diabetes, which ultimately led to his passing, but Nessa lives on, vowing to avenge his death on any dog in the house that’s dumb enough to get in her personal space. She’s an awesome cat who still meows a whole lot, often for no reason. But that’s good because I always thought, and still think, she’s meowing for two; herself and Bubba.

  1. Ahh that’s a sad yet happy story Pete. Nessa is beautiful and you’re blessed to have her. I’m still in awe that the dogs let her be.

I always thought the opposite all these years. Glad you got the right mix of personalities.

    RIP Bubba.

  2. Nice story. I had two cats for a long time. One eventually succumbed to kidney failure; the other to diabetes, though she lived with it for a couple years. How long did Bubba live with diabetes?

When I was a kid, we had a dog. We later got a cat. When we brought the kitten home, the dog was curious about this tiny little thing on the floor. The dog went to smell the little furball; the tiny little kitten slapped her. From that day forward, the cat ruled.

  3. Lovely story..

My cat was attacked by a fox. He was gripped round
the throat which damaged his voicebox. He managed to escape but thereafter his voice was a high pitched , hoarse squeak.

This happened the same weekend his brother was shot with an airgun and nearly died….

Cost us a fortune in vet’s bills…but they did both make a full recovery!

  4. Rolando: it’s funny that the story wasn’t even going to end like it did. I guess I still miss my Bubs.

dcr: We didn’t notice anything until it was too late. He was naturally a lazy kind of cat, so seeing him be lazy was no big deal. Seeing him be lazy and not eat was a whole other story. The vet managed to get him to hang around pretty comfortably for about three months, long enough for us to say goodbye. Then his quality of life went way downhill so we let him go. I never would have thought I’d have a diabetic cat. Seems so unusual.

Diane: I sympathize with the vet bills. It’s funny how I always thought that when faced with a situation like that, I’d just put the animal down, but when it really happened I realized how much of a family member my pets are. I’d do just about anything to keep them around, and I’d do it again. Glad to hear they both made it and are feeling fine! :)

FYI – Nessa is in the chair next to me, as usual, sleeping (as usual). I tried relaying all of your comments but she seems uninterested. Go figure. :D

  5. Oh what a wonderful story, pets always find a way to steal our hearts. I too have a cat his name is Pumpkin, he is a long hair orange tabby from the shelter as well. Cats are purr joy aren’t they?

    Sorry to hear about Bubba

  6. she’s gorgeous…but i’m sure she knows that. you must have had both her and bubba back in the day..i remember you had two but i don’t think they made themselves known the one time i visited your abode.

can you believe they gave Table (now *there’s* a talker!) three months to live (ha! i just typed ‘to love’ there on accident, how apropo) with liver cancer and that was four years and two surgeries ago. now? he’s the epitome of good health in his old, meowing age. he says hi, btw…or rather, menooooooow. ;)

  7. Debo Hobo: Orange cats are awesome. If I ever get another cat, it will be an orange one. Purr joy, lol, I had to read that a few times.

Bry: Speaking of orange cats, how is ol’ Table doing? He rocks, but every time I pet him, he got so excited that he would attack me and draw blood. I had no idea he had cancer. That’s crazy, but I’m glad to hear that he made it. Bubba was the big, black cat. They weren’t too keen on hanging out with people back then. Nessa is just now beginning to tolerate my kids – six years later! Meows to Table for me. :P

  8. Oooh, i do remember Bubba! I think he even let me near him for a second ;)

Table is amazing. He stopped doing that crazy overexcited biting thing a long time ago (thankfully). He has thyroid issues and is on meds and he’s losing weight as time goes on, but the boy’s somewhere around 15 so it’s not surprising. We just soak up his incredible essence every moment of every day we have him with us.

  11. Cats are great. If my whole family wasn’t allergic, I’d have a herd of them. My avatar on several forums is Serious Cat.

  13. Cute cat, mine’s better, but still not bad.

  14. If my cat wasn’t so lazy, she could beat up your cat. If you have an orange cat, then yeah, that’s a cool cat. Orange cats rule.
