Acorn Freakin’ City

This entry was posted on Oct 22 2007

acorn stash.jpgThe oaks must have been gettin’ busy over the spring/summer, because there are a billion acorns this year. The concrete slab in front of my shed has so many covering it, that it’s like walking on ball bearings. Here’s a collection of acorns in a tree shot by Nancy. She appreciates the kind compliments for her previous contributions, so keep ‘em coming – a happy wife is a happy husband. :P

Finally, I would like to say that I must hang out with some visually inept people, because nobody could figure out what the shadow picture was. So mega-props go to all who participated in my contest (which was appropriate for pre-schoolers):

Special smart-ass guess goes to Joe. The “Sundays-aren’t-meant-for-thinking” special recognition goes to Suzanne in Key West. I think she would have gotten it had it been Monday. :D

  1. I will admit I answered with some hesitation. It looked like venetian blinds to me, even without reading the other comments, but I was expecting a trick there somewhere. Like the shadow of some odd fencing or maybe the heat grid of a car’s rear view window.

Maybe your “visually inept” friends were expecting a trick as well? ;-)

  4. great pics. oaks are my favorite trees. unfortunatly, this is that time of year where I can’t believe we spent so much time and effort power washing the driveway of their stains…cause now? they’re baaaaaack. ;)

  5. dcr: I think you were influenced by your own photographic trickery! That was pretty slick coloring the pumpkin like that. At least you were up front about it. :)

Susanne: I’ve been spelling your name with a “z” until now. Sorry. And today is Tuesday. :D

Dianne: Right place, right time I suppose. You have a mac account – I’m envious.

Bry: Dude, I feel your pain. Beautiful trees, unrelenting assault of acorns, leaves and brown stuff. It’s not enough to make me pull them out, though. I love mine. Reminds me of my dog – if she weren’t so cute, she’d be dead! (j/k of course). :P

  6. Uh oh. The acorns are gathering… this can not be good.

  7. ha! i forgot about the leaves, the leaves! they are the bane of our plant beds’ existence.

and i hear ya about the dog. remember, i’ve got six felines who, if they weren’t so darn cute (and totally smarter than me)? their days would be nubered as well. ;)

  8. I am so glad I made that list. I will have to check to see what type of blinds those were specifically. My mind is racing! It is like a laser. I digress, hmmmm, this picture here, what do I think? I, unlike Bry, do not include oaks in my list of favorite trees, but I have noticed the park near my house has an oak tree that drops SUPER ACORNS (see not even kidding). These acorns are at least three to four times the size of the average a-corn. This oak was near another and made the normal oak look all feeble for even trying to throw down. Thanks for the props! OH yeah, nice pic.

  9. AntiBarbie: You ever see 28 Days Later? Stay away from the acorns. It’s a conspiracy by the government.

Bry, my favorite nature chick: You wouldn’t hurt a fly. You melt like buttah at the sight of anything remotely cute. Dude, last year I raked all of my oak leaves and the pile was (no exaggeration here) knee high and 8-10 feet in diameter. I got mulch for days…

Joe: We have some oaks with Super Acorns here as well. I swear, these things are the size of baseballs. I avoid these trees at all cost. Among the oak community, it’s all about who has bigger acorns. :)
