Pinecone Ginger bloomWhat I’m discovering about running this site is that I learning more about the plants in my yard. I’ve vaguely known that this was called Hawaiian Ginger and that it grows like crazy. Well, here the scoop: It’s Pinecone Ginger, aka Shampoo Ginger, aka Zingiber zerumbet. These giant blooms contain a liquid that has a wonderfully light but fragrant scent. Being a rhizome, it also propagates like crazy. This one hasn’t showed it’s flowers yet, but that’s coming soon. I’ll post a follow-up photo.

  7. I’ve never tried to cook with it, but I’m not sure if this is the kind that you can cook with anyway. I’ll have to read up more.

  8. Never seen that one before. I am interested to see what the blossoms look like…I just can’t believe blossoms are coming this time of year anywhere. I just keep seeing all the foiliage and thinking ahead to winter.

  9. OK, last reply to the Joeprah comment assault/DoS attack… :)

Dude, it stays hot here forever. That post about autumn finally arriving? Forget it. We have freakin’ mosquitoes now that are worse than any time this year. Hot, muggy, humid. Blech. But the plants love it.
