Loofah

1009070825.jpgYou know those neat, spongy loofah things you can buy in the bath section? Well, here’s what they look like before they arrive at the store. Yeah, weird.

I picked one the other day and peeled it. The seeds shake out and then you spray it off with a hose, maybe give it a soak in a light bleach/water solution. The result is a loofah sponge, but au naturale. I’m going to grow a ton of these next year.

  1. Hey Farmer Petee,
I really enjoy seeing signs of living things and hope your entire Harvest has been a Great Success. Take care:-)

  2. Definitely weird! Never would of none that was loofah. Good luck next year.

  3. Cool! I never knew that’s what they looked like…and it’s totally awesome that you’re home-growing your own loofah! Where did you get this idea and the loofah seeds?

  4. Leatherboots: you’ll probably get one for Christmas if you’re good.

Joe: Reminds me of zucchini. The vine has a funky smell though.

Joanne: A friend brought in some seedlings for me and I planted them next to my palm tree so they could have somewhere to climb. You can find seeds online or at a farmers market (probably). I’ll have a bazillion of them by years end – I can mail some out to you when winter comes, but I can’t say if they will sprout next season. It’s my first attempt at growing them. I don’t see why they wouldn’t.

  5. They’re supposed to be easy to grow from seed, but I’ve not had much luck with them. Maybe it’s just me.

  6. I just planted it and watered it – a lot. It grew incredibly fast. I had no idea what to expect.
