Moving to a New Domain – Maybe

This entry was posted on Sep 28 2007

I need your advice.

I read an article today from The Monetizer that mentions that moving to a new domain name makes you start over in search engine rankings. If this were a perfect world, I could post a 301 redirect, but Blogger doesn’t do that. This blog is less than a month old and I think moving now would not be too detrimental. Besides, ProBlogger just posted about PageRank and how not to get obsessed with it.

Another reason is that I love WordPress. I dream of customizable, 3-column layouts. I want more control over the big picture. I want to host my images on my own domain. Centralized power, ya know?

Also, if I changed my domain in MyBlogLog, Blog Catalog, etc… would it alienate my friends and community? I’m at a loss here and time is of the essence.

I appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks.

  1. I’m in the midst (sloow midst) of moving over to a self-hosted wordpress blog. About two weeks ago, I bought the domain and I’ve been fiddling around to get comfortable with it. I don’t mind the whole starting over (sooner is definitely better, though), but I want to make the move as seamless as possible and keep my old posts on blogger as re-direct links (so that people who have linked to my old pages won’t have broken links and google won’t punish my blog for having double content on the web).

As long as you take the time to notify your network of friends, it’ll all work out!

  2. LOLs, I just read your message on MBL. Yeah, my layout is a hack…I wanted an extra sidebar so I googled Blogger templates for 3-column layout and got lucky. I tried to find the link again by clicking on the credit at the very bottom of my page, but it looks like Thur is re-creating his site layout so I didn’t find it.

If you’re really worried about jumping in, I say create a second blog as a “test-site” for new layouts before applying it to this site.

  3. Well, I’m really pleased with your move. it’s really impressive and I like what you’ve done with your idea! It’s a one of a kind blog! :)

Can you make your photos larger? They’re really awesome and deserve to be viewed larger on the first view!

    :)

  4. Thanks, glad you like the new site!

The image sizes are a limitation of the photo gallery plugin I’m using. It’s a great tool, but displaying an intermediate size for the post as well as a small thumbnail for the gallery is not available. The gallery view and post view use the same image. Big images mean an ugly gallery. Any recommendations?
